With more than forty feature films, dozens of commercials, corporate videos and episodic television series to his credit, Derek Wan is a seasoned cinematographer and director. As an early adopter of the 24p high-definition digital format, his first HD feature film, the $2 million action thriller, MANHATTAN MIDNIGHT, has won the Best Feature Film Award and the Best Cinematography Award at the 24th Philadelphia International Film Festival. Derek Wan has also won the 1995 WorldFest Award in the Biographical & Autobiographical Category for the documentary MICHAEL LEE, in addition to awards from various photo competitions.

Derek Wan’s directing credits include action horror film SHADOW—Dead Riot, featuring Tony Todd, family comedy SUNSET FIGHTER and episodic TV drama series GENIC WAR. Derek has also directed a variety of TV commercials and corporate communication programs for clients like Sprint, Sanyo, Panda Express, YMCA and LeapFrog, etc.

Among Derek’s cinematography work are FIST OF LEGEND, starring Jet Li; ROYALWARRIORS, starring Michelle Yeow; SPIRITUAL LOVE, starring Chow Yun Fat; and the award winning MANHATTAN MIDNIGHT, starring Richard Grieco and Maggie Q. Derek’s broadcast credits include VAN-PIRES, a dramatic episodic children’s series for the FOX Channel, SUPERFIGHTS and BLOODMOON, HBO world premiere action movies.

Derek Wan is a frequent speaker on HD technology, film production and cinematography. He has given an assortment of technical presentations at Hong Kong Directors's Guild, Sony HD Forum in Beijing, SMPTE annual meetings, Fuji Film Cinematography Seminar and Avid HD “Start to Finish” Tour, among others. Derek was an adjunct lecturer at Ohio University and Hong Kong Baptist University.

Derek Wan’s technical insight, creative journals, film commentary as well as photographic work are often published in trade magazines throughout Asia.

Derek Wan received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University's School of Film and his Bachelor's degree from the Hong Kong Baptist University. He is a member and former Vice Chairman of the Society of Cinematographers, Hong Kong (H.K.S.C.).
